چکیده

Introduction In the last 10 years the use of MR-scanners with a magnetic field stronger than 3 Tesla (“Ultra-high field MRI”, ie. UHF-MRI, defined as 7 9.4 Tesla in this presentation) has increased sharply, mainly driven by the fact that the three main manufacturers decided to develop 7Tesla MRI scanners for research purposes. More recently, also human 9.4 Tesla research MRI scanners are offered commercially. Over the last ten years, important improvements in hardware and imaging sequences at 7Tesla have led to a quality of fMRI, anatomical neuroimaging, cerebral angiography and spectroscopy clearly surpassing the quality routinely obtained at 3Tesla. This improved performance has resulted in the use of UHF-MRI not only in normal, young volunteers but also for clinical research in patients. When using UHF-MRI scanners in patient populations the amount of subjects having implants or a history of surgery increases sharply, resulting in a more urgent need of safety testing of common implants as well as a strong local implementation of safety procedures. In this presentation, the safety aspects of UHF-MRI will be discussed, both regarding normal volunteers, patients and workers.

Safety Considerations on MRI Systems for Firefighters and Paramedics

Background and Objectives: The use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems is on the rise and the number of installed systems is constantly increasing all over the world. This raises the possibility for emergency personnel to get in contact with these systems. However, the clothing and working material of paramedics and firefighters is not designed for the use on magnets. M...

Does Exposure to Static Magnetic Fields Generated by Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scanners Raise Safety Problems for Personnel?

MRI workers are occupationally exposed to static and time-varying gradient magnetic fields.  While the 24-hour time-averaged exposure to static magnetic fields is about a few mT, the maximum static field strength can be as high as 500 mT during patient setup. Over the past several years, our laboratory has performed extensive experiments on the health effects of exposure of animal models and h...

Evaluation of MRI-based MAGIC polymer gel dosimeter in small photon fields

Background: Accurate small radiation field dosimetry is essential in modern radiotherapy techniques such as stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). Precise measurement of dosimetric parameters such as beam profile, percentage depth doses and output factor of these beams are complicated due to the electron disequilibrium and the steep dose gradients. In the p...

Health, safety and environmental risk management in laboratory fields

Background: Research project risks are uncertain contingent events or situations that, if transpire, will have positive or negative effects on objectives of a project. The Management of Health and Safety at Work (MHSW) Regulations 1999 require all employers and the self-employed persons to assess the risks from their work on anyone who may be affected by their activities. Risk assessment is the...
